From kitting out children with clothes for Eid and Christmas, to providing the elderly with food parcels, Fowzia Isaacs is one of the unsung heroes of her community.
Every Thursday, 400 people line up in front of her home in Manenberg to collect their food.
Ms Isaacs gets donations from various residents so that the elderly, children, mothers and fathers can have warm cooked meal.
She passes on donations of bread to the Druiwevlei Community Centre in Manenberg to feed children on Mondays, and other food donations are used to cook a pot of food for the elderly at the centre on Wednesdays.
She also hands out food parcels to the needy during the month of Ramadaan, and kits out children from head to toe for Eid or Christmas.
Having previously worked as machinist, she cuts the outfits out of material donated by factories to the Manenberg Feeding Scheme.
“Everyone knows that they can get food here on a Thursday and they look forward to it.
“This is my passion, and I love working with people. People respect me and I respect them,” she said.
“They start lining up here from noon already to collect their food. The same people come every week even the people working on the street or the people walking past and even the drug addicts,” she said.
People also donate their old furniture and building materials to Ms Isaacs, which she passes on to families whose homes have burnt down.
“I speak to everyone in a respectful manner. If they stand in the line with their pyjamas, I tell them to change because you don’t come out of your house in your pyjamas, and they listen to me; the next time they are fully dressed.
“My relationship with the community is very good; we have to look after each other not just ourselves,” she said.
Ms Isaacs’s goal is to open up a children’s shelter in Manenberg for neglected and abused children.
