Three people aged 28 to 30 have been taken in for questioning by detectives attached to the Organised Crime Investigations Unit after a lion cub was found in Athlone. According to provincial police spokeswoman Sergeant Noloyiso Rwexana, detectives followed up on information about a cub that was transported from Thabazimbi in Limpopo to the Western Cape.
The cub was discovered in Athlone after various addresses in the neighbourhood were searched, said Sergeant Rwexana.
A case docket of possession of endangered species was registered by the Stock Theft Unit and the lion cub was taken to a place of safety.
The estimated street value of the lion cub is R50 000. The investigation is on-going.
