Proposed traffic-calming measures for Bonteheuwel and other parts of the city are out for public comment until month’s end.
Vlamboom Road and Avocado Street will each get two speed bumps, and Dissel Road will get a speed bump and a raised intersection, according to the proposals.
“I really do encourage residents to have their say on the new proposed traffic calming measures, and say if that is what they want for the roads and for their community,” said ward councillor Angus McKenzie.
Traffic calming measures are also proposed for Kraaifontein, Delft, Belhar, Bishop Lavis and surrounding areas.
The affected roads were mostly near schools, hospitals, old-age homes and other vulnerable road users, but installation of the proposed measures depended on available funding, said mayoral committee member for urban mobility Rob Quintas.
“These proposed traffic-calming measures will enhance road safety for all road users, which is a top priority for the City,” he said.
Magmoeda Dramat, of Bonteheuwel, said Dissel Road needed two raised intersections because motorists had no regard for schoolchildren in the road. The road is home to Bergsig Primary School.
“There is definitely a need for traffic-calming measures in our road. Drivers speed and do not stop at stop streets,” she said.
