The Sherwood Park Neighbourhood Watch will be hosting a fund-raising comedy event on Saturday May 14, at the Country Manor in Schaapkraal.
Since October 2015, the group has grown from 10 members to 60 active members who patrol every night, through the streets of Sherwood Park.
The group currently operates with no proper equipment and can only communicate with each other via WhatsApp.
The group is in desperate need of basic items such as such as bibs, radios, torches, and a laptop.
The event will include a three-course meal as well as entertainment by stand-up comedian Waseef Piekaan, singer Shuneez, and vocal group Words SA. There will also be an auction of hampers, flower bouquets, and fruit baskets.
Aisha Ismail, treasurer of the neighbourhood watch, said the funds raised will also go towards upcoming events for the year.
“We will be hosting a youth day two weeks after the banquet – which will include a soccer, netball, and rugby tournament – as well as a horse show later in the year. The funds raised will be put towards those events. The members are very excited about the evening and the launch of the neighbourhood watch,” said Ms Ismail.
She added that the new equipment will benefit the group as the radios will help the members to communicate better.
“The neighbourhood watch is important to have because the police do not have the resources to be here all the time. We have to look after the community and be visible in the area so that people can stay out of our community, we are on the border line of Manenberg,” she said.
Tickets for the event costs R150 and can be bought from Aisha, contact her on 073 731 7882, or chairperson, Rezaan Hendricks on 082 564 4212, alternatively tickets an also be bought at the door.
