A 63-year-old woman died after she was hit by a taxi while trying to cross the road on the Jakkalsvlei Avenue bridge during peak-hour traffic in Bonteheuwel on Monday morning, say police.
Bishop Lavis police spokeswoman Sergeant Samantha Adonis said a taxi driver had been questioned and later released with an instruction to appear in the Bishop Lavis Magistrate’s Court today, Wednesday April 19. The driver was not arrested.
The bridge leads to Valhalla Drive in Kalksteenfontein.
Ward councillor Angus McKenzie said there was an allegation that the taxi driver had driven on the opposite side of the road, but Sergeant Adonis said that could not be confirmed, as the investigation was continuing.
Mr McKenzie said: “We have consistently warned and engaged on the reckless driving by taxi drivers in the morning peak with a number of taxis insisting on using Bonteheuwel as a short-cut to various other roads. I want to thank the team from Cape Town Crime and Traffic, as well our police and law enforcement officers for their very quick and swift reaction. Our deepest sympathy goes to the family and friends of the deceased. This life should never have been lost.”
