The Women for Change group in Ward 48, hosted a birthday party for one of the seniors in the community and invited 60 other seniors to share in the special occasion.
The event, on Wednesday June 19, at the Belthorn Recreation Centre, honoured Olga Cloete, from Pinati Estate, who celebrated her 89th birthday on Tuesday June 25.
A group of 17 women, who make up the Ward 48 Women for Change, arranged the event and secured donations for the four-course meal.
Speakers at the event included Beryl Simpson and DA proportional representative (PR) councillor, Sumaya Taliep.
Ms Taliep said seniors can still do a lot in their communities to make a positive difference. She also spoke out strongly against parents who hide their children’s criminal activities.
“You don’t have respect for yourself, your family and community if you allow crime to continue – if you hide your child or the gun. Your silence condones violence. We have to change this. We must unite. If we stand together, we will win the fight against crime, as difficult as it is,” Ms Taliep said.
Maggie Freeman, from the Ward 48 Women for Change group, said the event was two-fold – to celebrate Ms Cloete’s birthday, and to educate the seniors about their rights, healthy eating and the role they can play in fighting crime.
