Chellan promises explosive boxing lesson

Wasim Chellan in action against Lybon Ntshani for the WBF Africa title back earlier this year.

Manenberg boxer Wasim Chellan clinched the WBF Africa title in the Welterweight division in March with a dominant display against Lybon Ntshani and this Friday, the stage is set for Chellan to return to the squared circle and deliver yet another dose of boxing spectacle to his fans as he defends his title at the Goodwood Prison Hall; the venue for the fight.

Chellan, still on the rise in the world of boxing, has carved out a path of destruction through the welterweight ranks. Undefeated in seven professional fights, he has stopped three of the men who dared to challenge him.

Speaking of the event, Chellan says he feels privileged to be able to defend his title in front of his home supporters.

“I’m very excited about the event and the fact that I’ll be able to defend my very first title at home.

“(I’m) feeling stronger and fitter as I’ve had a solid camp preparation with my team, Brice Boxing Academy.”

He urged Capetonians to come out in their numbers to see the magic in the ring from the home fighters and promised jaw-dropping action.

“It will be explosive, bloody and nail-biting, keeping you on the edge of your seats,” he said.

Friday’s spectacle, presented by Jackie Brice of Jackie Brice Promotions, is a welcome treat for boxing enthusiast in the Mother City but Chellan’s defence of his title isn’t the only highlight of the evening. The undercard features a bout that has fans buzzing with excitement.

The vacant Western Cape Provincial Junior Lightweight Championship is up for grabs, and it promises to be a war between Capetonian Thembani “Baby Jakes” Mbangatha and Bulelani Gondeka from Mossel Bay.

Mbangatha (12-1) has bounced back nicely from his first career loss in 2021 and was eager to make a statement in his last outing. And he did when he stopped Thabiso Zakhe. He will go to the fight looking to keep the streak going.

In addition to Chellan and Mbangatha, another undefeated prospect, Lwando Mngambi, and his opponent Goitsemodimo Poo will be in action, further adding to the excitement of the evening.
