Victims of a fire in Vygieskraal are appealing to the public for help to rebuild their lives.
The fire, on Sunday March 5, destroyed five wendy houses, which were home to 18 people, according to the City of Cape Town’s Disaster Risk Management Centre’s spokeswoman Charlotte Powell.
City Fire and Rescue Service spokesman Jermaine Carelse said the fire was reported at 10.45pm and its cause was unknown.
Nadeema Colby, who lived in one of the wendy houses with her husband and three small children, said the fire started when one of the residents left the stove unattended.
She and her husband are now trying to rebuild their home.
“It happened on my daughter’s birthday. The City doesn’t give material anymore so we have to get our own,” she said.
Ms Powell said that the South African Social Security Agency had been asked to provide humanitarian assistance to the victims.
