On Wednesday May 3, Athlone police arrested a 29-year-old man from Bokmakierie on a charge of murder.
Police were called to a scene in Bokmakierie where an adult male was shot. The victim’s mother then informed the police who the suspect was.
According to police spokeswoman Sergeant Zita Norman, the victim was taken to hospital where he later died.
The suspect appeared in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court on Thursday May 4 and was denied bail and is currently being kept at Pollsmoor Prison.
On Sunday April 30, Athlone police arrested a 45-year-old man at his Athlone home for the possession of an illegal firearm.
Sergeant Norman said officers attended to a complaint at the Oasis Road address, in Hazendal, Athlone, at about 11pm where they found a .38 Special revolver and five bullets. The suspect was due to appear at the Athlone Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday May 2.
