A 38-year-old man was injured when four men tried to hijack him in front of his family’s home in Surrey Estate, on Friday April 21.
Manenberg police spokesman Captain Ian Bennett said the hijacking unfolded in Arries Street, around 10pm. The man was waiting in the car for his wife while she was inside the house.
Four men then approached him on foot and shot at him. He then killed one of the suspects, aged 27, when he shot him in the upper body.
“As he waited for his family at the car he saw four men approaching him. One of the men pulled out a firearm and fired a shot at him, hitting him in the leg,” said Captain Bennett.
The suspect died on the scene while the three others fled on foot in an unknown direction.
Captain Bennett said a firearm was recovered on the scene and that an inquest docket would be opened to determine whether the suspect had been shot in self defense. “A case of attempted hijacking has been opened for investigation and no arrests have been made,” he said.
